we'll see how he does next to president obama which i think is a little bit different. >> yeah. >> that ohio poll is interesting because the cbs one we had last week had it at ten points. now we have another one showing it at nine points. if you start to look at the map, if he doesn't take iowa, if it gets away from him, it becomes difficult to put a puzzle together to win. >> by the way, there has been this narrative that there is the grand conspiracy and that the polls are skewed. this is what walter mondale said in 1984. this is what moveon.org said in 2004, that all the polls were skewed against john kerry and moveon.org said you just wait. and now you're hearing it frantically on the other side, which ironically, again, they are putting fox news in the grand conspiracy. >> what about the conference call today that we have to plan and organize? >> exactly. my point is here we've got a couple of local polls that are showing this, and more importantly, and you guys talk to the romney people all the time. i certainly talk to them all the time. i can tell you, they're not pushing back o

if what we saw tonight is what we see in the next two debates, president obama is going to be in serious trouble. how is this going to play in ohio? he has to make the case to the middle class that he's headed in the right direction with the economy. >> not one time did he say i want the american people to know we've added private-sector jobs for the last 30 months and we're headed in the right direction. how hard is that to say? is that hard? >> ezra klein is coming up to check some of the money numbers that we did hear tonight. we're mad about the numbers that were not articulated as we check the one that were. our live coverage of the first presidential debate. stay with us. >> this tax plan. and now, five weeks before the election, he's saying that his big bold idea is, never mind. >> we'll focus on getting the cost of health care down. if the president, tore re-elected you'll see a $1706 million lost to medicare. i'll restore the 716 billion to medicare. >> mitt romney closed the debate with a list and numbers and what sounded like a lot of detail given that he's been criticized by

i don't think you'll see the same barack obama. i think it's very clear that the campaign and the president regret having not pushed back on the debate stage on certain things mitt romney said. the president was very aggressive on the stump the next morning saying he wasn't telling the truth, i was surprised to see this version of mitt romney show up. you're going to hear a lot of that. it's a little harder to do when you're not before 58 million viewers in prime time or whatever the number ended up being. but i think that's what they're going to be doing going into the next debate and i think that is what you will see the president do on the stage in new york on october 16th. >> thank you very much for being here tonight. >>> coming up, mitt romney says he wants to make it possible for every state to do what massachusetts did with health care. but if he's elected, he'll make it impossible for any of them to do it. i'll explain it with one of the architects of romney care. >>> and later the crafty political ad steve martin has done
